F = Find a great spot
For your most challenging tasks, find the ideal place and time to work. This could be in your favourite coffee place, at home or in a meeting room at your office. I advice you to get away from your desk. If you need to focus on writing for example an article or build a presentation, it is best that you temporarily become invisible to your coworkers. This way you won’t get distracted. So close your office door and hang up a “Do not disturb” sign. Get yourself some room to think.
O = Organise yourself
Make sure you have everything at hand for the project you want to work on. Have the right folders out. Bring all your notes. Ensure you have a power adapter for your laptop with you — especially when you work outside the office for a longer period of time. Prepare yourself properly in advance. So you are able to completely focus on the task you want to work on.
C = Concentrate
Multitasking is physically impossible. The human brain can only process one thing at a time. When you are juggling multiple tasks at the same time, your brain is literally switching continuously between all the balls you are trying to keep in the air. Listening to classical music helps you concentrate. So plug in some ear plugs and listen to some Mozart. Or visit noisli.com for some cool background sounds.
U = Unavailable to others
Disconnect completely from the distractions of the Internet. We really don’t need to be connected 24/7. Put your phone on mute or — even better — on airplane mode. During a business meeting you are also temporally unavailable to others. See this time as an important meeting with yourself. Schedule this in your diary, just like all your other obligations. Treat it as sacred time in which you tackle a difficult task. You can always return calls later on.
S = Systemise your work
Also spend some time thinking of ways how you could work smarter, instead of only trying to work harder. Stash certain tasks together and work in batches. This works perfectly for your administration. Do them at times which suit your natural body rhythm best. Also evaluate which tasks you can automate or delegate. You don’t need to do everything yourself. Work “on” your business instead of “in” your business. Build checklists. This will pay off in the future. And allows you to focus even more on the things which you value the most.
Good luck with casting the Magic spell of Focus Pocus. May it help you to become more efficient and effective as a Marketing Superhero. Be sure to download the excerpt of my new book for free here!
