Move from inspiration to action

Inspiration is important, but without action nothing much will happen in your business or in the rest of life. I am a huge believer we all need to ensure we get a regular dosis of inspiration — to help you generate new and fresh ideas, to expand your worldview or build your motivation. But without taking any action all will remain pretty much the same. You need to move from inspiration to implementation.

Pause and take time to think

The internet is a wonderful source of inspiration, often offered to us in bite sized pieces. Allowing you to quickly scan through a blogpost —like this one — easily pin a cool picture to your Pinterest board, or spending 18 minutes watching an inspiring TED talk. It is so easily available that we might take things for granted. But before you move on with the rest of your day: pause and take some time to think. Based on what you’ve just read, seen or learned think about how this could improve your life. What needs to be done in order to make this reality?

What and when is your next action?

Define what your next action needs to be. And most importantly: when are you going to undertake this. I believe inspiration fades away within two days. If you haven’t taken any action within 48 hours, then it is most likely that you won’t do so at all. Action steps don’t need to be big. Keep in mind that Rome wasn’t build in a day. So take things step by step. Your next action could be as small as looking up a phone number and writing in your agenda when you are going to call this person. Bus most importantly: actually taking the time to make the call.

Done is better than perfect!

As described in my book “How to Become a Marketing Superhero” I see many people get stuck in the planning phase. Wanting so desperately to make it perfect. But by putting yourself “out there” — whether it is launching a product, offering a new service or writing a blogpost — you get valuable feedback on which you can make things better. Nobody knows precisely what works. Our society has become way too complex. By taking on a more experimental approach let’s you learn by doing. Done really is better than perfect.
