failing to plan quote

Failing to plan is planning to fail

With your goals written down and placed in sight — as visible reminder — it now comes down to the actual doing. Do you have a plan in place? Failing to plan is planning to fail. This quote has been attributed to Alan Lakein, an American author on personal time management. I believe it is true, both in business and in our personal lives. You need to have a plan in place, otherwise someone else will have one for you. And then you’re no longer in charge.

Plan time for planning

Time for preparation always pays of. It helps you become more effectively and efficient. Take as little as five minutes to ensure you have clarity on your desired outcome and how you intend to achieve this. Wether it’s ensuring you arrive on time for your appointment, so you can set the scene properly. Or mentally preparing for a successful day at the office, knowing what your key priorities are that day.

Plan time for doing

Planning is important, but the actual doing of these plans is crucial. And this takes time. So ensure you plan time for that too. It is so easy to remain stuck in planning mode, and we’ve all had our share of good intentions. But you only make an impact in this world with the actions you take. Ensure you list your next actions and have time to do them accordingly.

Be the director of your life

By sticking to these appointments with yourself, you take further steps towards self mastery. It allows you to be in the driver’s seat instead of sitting in the back of the bus. Empowering yourself to make the desired changes you wish to make. Of course not everything is within your control. But I strongly believe you always have a choice.

Ask for help

Face it: you have to do it yourself. But luckily you don’t have to do it all alone. Nobody has ever accomplished something truly great all by themselves. So go out and get support: declare your accountability. Share your goal with a friend or colleague. By sharing your dream you’ll get help in making it reality.
